If you’ve ever bought a cheaper phone from an unofficial seller or online store, it might be time to double-check whether it’s actually legal. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has started cracking down on phones that aren’t registered in their official system—especially those with fake or tampered IMEI numbers (PTA Patched CPID Phones).
These phones—often referred to as “Patched” or “CPID”—may seem like a good bargain at first, but they can land users in serious trouble. PTA has made it clear that using such devices is a criminal offense under Pakistani law. You could face hefty fines or even jail time, and claiming “I didn’t know” won’t be a valid excuse anymore.
The government’s enforcement arm, the FIA, is working closely with PTA to stop the spread of these phones. Their joint efforts include confiscating illegal devices, making arrests, and tracking the networks that distribute them.
Beyond the legal risks, there are personal ones too. These unregistered phones are more vulnerable to hacking, fraud, and data theft. They also disrupt network performance and pose security concerns at a national level.
How to Check Your Phone:
Not sure about your device? You can verify its registration:
-
SMS: Send your phone’s IMEI to 8484
-
Web: Visit https://dirbs.pta.gov.pk
-
App: Download the PTA Device Verification app on Android
If it’s not registered, it won’t work on any local mobile network—and it might even get confiscated.
The Bottom Line:
Buying a legal phone might cost a little more, but it gives you peace of mind and keeps you out of legal trouble. If you see illegal phone sales happening, report them to PTA or FIA. It’s everyone’s responsibility to play it safe.
