A video purportedly showing Grand Mufti of J&K, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam making an announcement regarding the sighting of the Shawal moon went viral on social media platforms, causing a stir. It is believed that the video was leaked by an individual who accompanied a group of media persons from government-run Doordarshan Kendra Srinagar. The video caused confusion as it only featured the negating version of the statement. Many netizens took potshots at Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam over the matter, while others justified the recording of the video, stating that it was standard practice to pre-record both the affirmative and negative versions of such announcements.

“I was approached by some media persons of DoorDarshan Kendra Srinagar to pre-record the video-clips”, Islam said adding they Door Darshan people can’t make it to me at the time of actual announcement, due to their busy schedule.
“While the recording was going on in presence of over ten people, some miscreant has recorded one version of my statement and posted it on social-media platforms in an attempt to create confusion”, Islam said.
“If at all the video-clip in circulation makes it to the social media, I ask the people not to consider it until there is any announcement from any credible media organization”, Islam said.
The Grand Mufti has taken action by referring the matter to law enforcement agencies to take action against the individual who leaked the video, as they were attempting to cause a breach of law and order.

“We are currently reviewing CCTV footage to identify the individual responsible for this mischievous act,” said the Grand Mufti. He further added that a letter has been sent to the Cyber Crime department, and the Crime Branch and Director General of Police have been informed to register an FIR and take strict action against the person responsible for leaking the video. “The individual responsible for this act has no understanding of the negative repercussions that such a thing can have on the public,” said Islam.
